This article is written by a former atheist. I believe tasting the absence of God in his life provided him this revelation.
The thing I see the most damaging to society about atheism is the removal of God. That not only affects the individual, but in turn, affects the entire culture. Remove God, you remove law. Teach that (there's no God) to kids, you've got a generation of lawlessness and unaccountability. Teach kids the universe is governed only by natural laws, they will choose "what's in it for me" over "what's the moral thing to do", every time. Kids can't properly discern the value of life. Consider Columbine, CO (and similar incidents).
Even a "moral" Freethinker has no defense against satan. Without the presence of the Holy Spirit, satan goes unchallenged.

Would you accredit those actions as the natural laws of the cosmos? Or perhaps maybe just bring God back into the picture so you'd have someone (or "it" as you choose to call God) to blame it on for the rest of your life. I notice that from the atheist. Make God real when you need someone to blame the woes of the world on.

      Of course, these actions are horrible. However, blaming them on 'godlessness' is short sighted. My example was supposed to show that many people have committed atrocities in the name of god.
      If a maniac killed my family, I would attribute it to blind luck. It's that simple. By taking a god who could have prevented it out of the picture, I'm left with nothing more than chance, which is less aggravating than a god who could have intervened but chose not to.
      I don't blame the woes of the world on god because god doesn't exist for me. However, I use the woes of the world as evidence that an omniscient, omnipotent, omnibenevolent being cannot exist because such occurrences contradict that notion.

I'll go another step further and state that atrocities supposedly committed in the name of THE God (of the Bible) were falsely represented by what has long been called "the Church". I'm citing the Crusades. The "Church" has long been a political power, masked by a "religious" title.
        I find it almost incomprehensible that you, a disciple of logic and science, would lower your intellect to such a point as citing anything as "blind luck". However, that gives me some insight as to how you believe the universe, and life it's self was created.

        What about people who killed doctors who performed abortions? Let me guess, they're not "real Christians."
        As for blind luck: Yes, lots and lots of things happen based on probability. Anyone with any knowledge of quantum mechanics knows this. The great thing about probability, though, is that given enough time and space, amazing things can happen. If the chances for life to develop in a solar system are one in one hundred billion, then life has developed on at least 125 billion worlds in the universe.
        But if my wife and child were killed by a maniac with a gun, or a meteorite or bolt of lightning, it would feel better for me to think that it was simply chance than to think that an all-loving god would allow their deaths.

        Given sufficient time and the right conditions, you can expect a certain, small percentage of kids who are already mentally unstable to shoot up a schoolyard. It's just probability.
        And many, many of the Christians I've spoken with, and a good deal of the Muslims, have said that believing in god might not be rational, but it makes them "feel good." But, then again, they might not be "real Christians."
        And if you could provide me with a better, more rational explanation as to why good people, through no fault of their own, meet horrible fates, I'd be glad to hear it. A good example would be a congenital disease that kills infants mere hours after birth. Why would an all-knowing, all-loving, all-powerful god allow such a thing to happen?

        And to add to the death list would be the deaths caused by Sars that was in Asia and Aids in Africa. If god punishers sinners with those kind of things, then wouldn't your every day "Biblician" as I call it, think of 1/3 of Africans and millions of Asians as evil?

        You see, friend (with the exception of "there IS NO God", or that He is the "God Of and Cause of All Calamities"), I've had many of these thoughts already.
        At one point I tried to believe that Jesus was "interpreted by different faiths in their own language and understanding". (ie: Jesus was Buddha to the Buddhists, Krishna to the Hindus, etc...) This stemmed from my own "lack of information". Study Jesus and study the others. He's NOT the same as the others. Neither is Jehovah (Yahweh) the same as any other "god". Not in attributes, nor in promises.

        The "God of the Bible" repeatedly refers to Himself (or sends His prophets forward, representing Himself as) "the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob"

        Wikipedia has been shown to be both more accurate and more frequently updated than the Encyclopedia Britannica, so don't doubt it's veracity.
        However, the Koran calls Jews and Christians "people of the Book," and says that Jesus, Moses and Abraham were all prophets of Allah. Interestingly, however, Jesus didn't seem to think to mention anything about Islam.

        This particular article cites at one point, "Not all of these criteria are necessarily connected with Abraham"...so there goes your statement, "And it all goes back to Abraham"

        God states over and over that He is a "covenant God" and has established these covenants with "His people". He calls them, "My People".
        In Abraham's case, "And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him. [Gen 17:19] That's God's covenant with His People.
        Abraham and Sarah (out of lack of faith) disobeyed and brought forth a child outside of God's covenant. Ishmael's a child brought forth of sin and therefore no part of God's covenant. The Arab's have been falsely claiming Ishmael as a covenant child for years. It's a lie. Muslims wish they had a covenant with the only God that has power. But they don't.

The first para of this article shots itself,atheism knows ther is a god but refuse to admit it, seems like a contradiction.To mikhurst post,before christianity there was law and order in all parts of the world,when christianity was introduced to these heathen societies it was usualy accompanied with the sword.Many a sect of people have been exterminated or nearly so in the spread of religion.Funny though this doesn't hold true with oriental doctrines,they tended to stay at home;strange.

It may not make sense to you because you don't know both sides. I think what he's trying to imply is, most people convert to atheism because they're ******ed off at God, not because they buy into that He never existed. They just delete Him off they're list of "reality".

      I have to say, yes. But at the same time, I have to cite the terms "lukewarm" and "sitting on the fence". "Lukewarm" means one has accepted Christ or calls one's self a Christian, but is not professing Jesus and therefore walking in little to none of His Power. And, "sitting on the fence" is someone undecided, but "liking or maybe disliking the idea" of being Christian.
      As for a true (born-again) Christian turning to atheism: That Christian remains redeemed to the Father (if they truely committed in the first place).
      They're what's called "backslidden" if they remain "out there" and called "prodigals" if they return back home to Christ. Many of these types of Christians have turned away because of lack of faith during hard times. Fear and doubt are some of satan's greatest "tools".

        There was a time when I used to believe in the christian god. I also believed some of the things the author wrote. I also beging to look for any type of evidence supporting creationism. I'll accept that my faith wasn't strong enough because I allways had serious doubts within me but I was affraid to confront those doubts. My point is that I believe that I know enough of both sides. And I know that those things make sense to the people in the theist side. But from the other side it just doesn't make any sense.

This series of articles is nothing more than incoherent rantings. Several of them call on governments to kill atheists, or at least make outright atheism illegal, but also call democracy "heathen creature rule." Another one says that computers are smarter than atheists because computers can filter out "smut" on the Internet. Still another says that atheism makes you gay. And another one says that all computer crime is the fault of atheists and other "non-believers."
This is ridiculous bull that doesn't add to any discussion of atheism. Whoever submitted this should be ashamed.

  I knew this article would raise a few eyebrows. Especially since it's written by an atheist "convert". You guys get real sensitive when something comes out against atheism. So much so that you start paraphrasing and implying your own meanings. I looked pretty good and I don't see anywhere it saying, "atheism makes you gay", nor "computers are smarter than atheists". But now that you mention that, is the mind of the atheist "smarter" than the computer?

    And the essay on page 2, dated 8/13/98 is entitled "COMPUTERS SMARTER THAN ATHEISTS."
    Just a tip: If you want to go about converting people to believe in your god, it would be better to start off with something other than "You're a horrible person and the source of all evil in the world."

      I guess this guy's pretty bitter about what he's witnessed living in the "atheist" circle. This guy's not "preaching my creed". I prefer a gospel of Grace, over a gospel of condemnation. However, whether you like it or not, there's truth in both.
      Remember, I didn't write the article, I just posted it. It's obviously not written to be evangelical. I knew it would raise ire. I say, so what. I've been called a "whiney putt", a "bigot" and a lot of other things on these posts. What purpose would I be serving if I posted only articles that were congruent with your beliefs?
      Grin and bear it, guys. You lost one from your camp. And he's speaking boldly against what he experienced. There is some amount of truth in it (as harshly spoken as it may be).

        The man is a raving lunatic, not because he believes in god, but because he can't seem to make a cogent argument without frothing at the mouth. If there were something one could call an atheist "camp," I'm sure we'd be glad to be rid of him. I've been an atheist for quite some time now, and we don't have parties where we sit around watching pornography while having gay sex with animals and committing computer crime, no matter what this guy says.
        If he was an atheist, which I doubt, he was one because of ignorance, not because of knowledge. Few of the articles are grammatically correct, and none of them make logical sense. In truth, he would have been a detriment to the cause of reason, and I for one am glad he's on your side, because he's making you look like fools.

        You also say in one of your posts that, "Adam and Eve were not real, even the church acknowleges that...This is also true for the Noah story."
        I'm just wondering, what kind of "church" were you going to? And it's no wonder that whatever it was that you think you found made no sense. It wasn't even a Christian church, was it?

        Actually I atended a christian school and then moved to a Catholic school in the third grade and I now attend a Jesuit/Catholic school. From what I have heard it has been decided that the Adam and Eve story was meant to be symbolic more than to be taken realistically.
        Also, more people have died due to God.

        First of all, the capitilization things are because I am not the best of typists.
        I do not belive it was my school that said the Adam Eve story was symbolic but it still makes more sence.
        More people have died due to God. The San Francisco earthquake could be chalked up to God I think as humans could not have controled it. The Holocaust was bad but more people have still died because of God (taking of the holy land, Jerico, Crusades, supposed drowning of all of Egypts armies, etc etc etc)
        I have a rudimentry idea of what born again means but would like to hear a more precise definition.

        Sorry, but last time I cheked a lot great percentage of serial murders and mass murders worldwide were some kind of religious extremist. To me saying that there's a relation between atheism and crime is equal to say that is a relation between theism and crime. There is people who just lack of mental health and integrity, so their beliefs really doesn't matter.

        I'm also going to restate again, that "RELIGION" and "GOD" are NOT synonymous. Committing something "in the name of God" doesn't (rightfully) hang the responsibility of that action on God. I would also ask you to be mindful that "mass suicides" orchestrated by Jim Jones and David Koresh are "cultists", not "religious extremists".

        - The killings of evangelican farmers by catholic religious extremists in Chiapas, Mexico.
        - The Christian wars in the early 20th century in the southwestern Mexico.
        My point was that not because there is people who did horrible things in name of the christian god or any other god, it can be said that faith in that god made those people do what they did, nor that the lack of faith made the people you mentioned what they did.

What do you mean about that?Are you saying there was no structure in any culture before Christianity arrives,that those cultures had no moral values,maybe unique to themselves but a sense of right and wrong.what was a taboo or wasn't.Your last paragraph I agree totally with and your first, I don't really think that his side is a universial thought just his take on how he disbelieved in God

By the way. I have been an atheist from birth, at first because my parents thought me to be one, but later I went on and read the bible and found the idea of god to be ridicolous.
If there is god, I am going to hell. Atleast I wont get bored of sleeping and listening to someone play the harp!

  Like, did you ever have a REAL bad day. And you can't wait for it to end. Your greatest consolation is, "tomorrow's GOT to be better than today...there's not one thing more that could have gone wrong!" Well in hell, your WORST day here is going to be better than your best day there. And they'll only get worse. Because there's going to be NO HOPE of EVER getting out.
  Think about that. If you're so into music, there's some songs about hell too. If you want to "go deep" into them, you'll come out not wanting so much to go to hell.

Christians always whine about someone who is satanic. This is usually someone who does not agree with them. Frankly my only problem with some atheists is that they tend to put all religions in the same box. Other than that I would not call them Satanic, because they don't believe in a Judeo-Christian god.

  I can make a funny, yet true comparison: Modern "Christians" are like the Pilgrims that moved out of England. Spend the day reading the bible and believing in every word it has, because the bible says you should. If someone gets sick, you blame them on doing sins. If someone is a non-Christian, you bash them using only the power of numbers. I mean, Christianity takes up one third of the whole world, mostly in Europe and America, where about 60-90% are christians. They have so many more people than any other religion, that they can easily out number them and persecute them. I can't believe Non-Religious people are still only at 16%...

    That's a worldwide survey, but about 64% of Swedes and 55% of Japanese are nonbelievers. The more advanced a culture, the less likely they are to believe in god.

      That makes me sad actually, since Finland (my home country) is usually on the top5 of international math contests and stuff, about 90% of us Finns are still pure Christians. That's one of the reasons I moved out. If I could've, I would be living in Sweden, but I have only had 1 year of Swedish education, so I wouldn't really be able to handle living there. So I moved to Colorado. Sigh... What has Finland come to. But enough about that.
      I've been thinking of moving to japan in my later life though, due to the very small effect of religion on politics, and I actually find much more sense in Buddhism and such than in Christianity.
      Still I was actually quite surprised how many Swedes and Japs are nonbelievers these days. I was expecting them to be like Finland.

I like reading this story whenever I need a good laugh.
Other times it reminds me that some people in the world are truly insane but when you attach religon to it they are not considered insane any more.

Alright. I received a message from Mikhurst about the comment I made on page 1. I want to know what you guys think:

  Alright, this is kinda long so I'll separate my answer from the comment. (No, not everything I say here is a fact).
  "Yes, Infact, we know that he was born from 2 to 8 b.c; not at the year "0", died at 29 to 36 a.d, but there is no proof that he ever actually was resurrected, nor is there any proof of him dying for sins.
  There have been reports on ancient documents about popular drug use at the time (cannabis), which also may have led Jesus trough a religious experience trough hallucination. This may also been an influence for other people at the time to think of him as a messiah of a newly found religion.
  There is also no proof of any of the events of the bible ever happening, nor any proof of god having written it. Besides, there are countless errors in the bible, that we have proven to be similar to the writing of the time of Jesus. I'm not going to list them. There are so many"

  What mercy? The god you pray to has quoted himself slaughtering millions of people, like the Noah's ark incident and the killing of the firstborn sons of eqypt. Is this really your idea of a loving and merciful god. On my opinion, God is more homicidal than Hitler and Bentolini put together.
