In a rare public discussion of her husband's infidelity, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton said Monday that she probably could not have gotten through her marital troubles without relying on her faith in God.

Yeah, faith that hanging in there with Bill Jeff would pay dividends in terms of her own personal ambition. She called that one right.

Am I too cynical? I can never tell.

On this one, maybe just a bit. I think the more important thing is how shocked many of her, and of Edwards, supporters that happen to believe there is no God, will be when they find out about this. I bet most had no idea that Hilary and Edwards would ever say things like this...

""Clinton said she's "been tested in ways that are both publicly known and those that are not so well known or not known at all." She said it's those times when her personal faith and the prayers of others sustain her.

"At those moments in time when you are tested, it is absolutely essential that you be grounded in your faith," she said....

      Uhmmm faith in what, Exactly?

Faith in the knowledge that those who support her are gullible?

Faith that no one in the Dem party would question her in any way? Can't be judgmental!

Although I dislike his name, I believe SlapALib has it right. Hillery learned when she was in Arkansas that she couldn't get anywhere without the name Clinton.

How many people know that when she first married Bill she didn't take on his name? During Bill's first term as Gov. of Ark. she went by Hillary Rodham period. After Bill lost his bid for re-election (how many know that?) she began going by Hillary Rodham Clinton.

If you ask me to cite my source for the above, I am the source. I lived in Arkansas at the time.

        LOL

I love my name. I love watching people get wrapped up in it. People see what they want to see. It's like a Rorschach Inkblot Test.

Has no one ever heard of giving someone a slap on the back?

And I'm sure I'm not the only one that noticed when she was first lady, it was Hilary RODHAM Clinton, when she ran for the

Senate it was Hilary RODHAM Clinton, but now that she's running for President it's Hilary Clinton, the RODHAM vanished from her name, of course if by some chance she is elected President I suspect the RODHAM will reappear, about the same time the Clinton disappears and we would have President Hilary Rodham and her "first man"? Bill Clinton.

I posted this story out of curiosity. Is the religious right a political group influenced by their faith, or a faith group influenced by their politics? Which is the master and which is the servant?

If faith is supreme, then the Christian right will wish Mrs. Clinton well for her coming out with this testimonial of faith in her life, just as they do whenever conservative politicians declare their faith publicly or testify how God helped them through a personal crisis (Newt, DeLay, etc.).

If politics is supreme, then we'll see cynical and sarcastic comments, she'll not be given any benefit of the doubt, and her level of faith will be questioned as political opportunism. Then we'll know that God and faith take second place in their lives, after political affiliation.

I've got to ask now Ed, you said "stians REALLY were a FAITH based ministry rather than an adjunct of the Republican party"

Now you can't really mean that, because if that were true, after reading this story, wouldn't that mean you think that Hilary and Edwards are really republicans because they are Christians, and Christians, in your estimation, are "an adjunct of the Republican party" or is it you are sayiing that Hilary and Edwards can't really be Christians because they are democrats?

Ok, I'm done putting words in your mouth for you, since I'm sure that although that is what logic would dictate you mush have meant, I know it isn't really what you intended, so I'll wait for you to answer in your own words now.

Uhmm Carter was a "Born Again" Christian. The Fact that he was "Born Again" kinda negates "lived his faith admirably his whole life" ya think?

Skippy with his matching purple tie? Please. Thank god I'm not religious.

"I sin every single day," said Skippy, the 2004 vice presidential nominee. "We are all sinners and we all fall short." wearing a purple tie to match Sojourners' signature color

(Who the hell has a signature color, and why?),

promoted himself as the candidate most committed to the group's mission of fighting poverty.

Jesus said you who have not sinned shall cast the first stone, Well? Edinbug? People that attack the Christian faith and GOD usually are hurting inside and have to blame someone for that hurt. Carter for being such a HONEST Christian sure does not stand behind the Bible which, states that anyone who stands against the chosen people(Jews) will not be accepted in Heaven.

Is it not possible that until we see more than those few words from her about her faith that based on her past we have a few doubts, but at the same time think it's good that she has the faith in God that she now claims, but has not been evident in her past words or behavior? I will say this, with so many on the left, and many on the right for that matter, that don't believe in God, it took faith to openly make that statement. It's just sad that in being realistic one must wonder if it was to be honest, or if it was a political move on her part. But I hope she was sincere, all Christians should have total faith in God.

And it should also be interesting to see what effect her words here, and I do hope she was sincere, will have on those of her supporters that do not have any faith in God, or even faith that there is a God.

Your polling methodology is flawed. True religious righies are few and far in between at Nutscape. This site is a magnet for politcal junkies, so most of the responses will be from a political frame of reference

InChrist, I agree, I wouldn't really consider myself a Christian, but have dear friends who are, and if it wasn't for their faith, I'm not sure how they would have managed,(death of children, parents, husband. and another both children and husband with cancer) I've always been very happy for them because even the best of friends cannot always give the comfort and strength to those who suffer so much. Not sure I'd put Hilary in that catagory, she has more or less choosen her problems,to stay with them for whatever reasons, but if she sincerely means it..great!

so your comment 'That is the power of faith' is right I think, but I question some people's motives to say 'use' that, especially politicans.

We are all sinners, some worse than others.

I think what makes a good Christian or religious person is one who can admit they sin and ask God for forgiveness while learning from their mistakes (sins).

Bush is a phony Christian that goes through the motions, used religion to get elected, has no regard for family values, is a liar and a cheat.

Hillary is a sincere religious person because she stood by her husband despite his sins and has always been strong regarding family values. I know this because of personal correspondence with her when she was First Lady and working on health care issues.

Sad that this makes me wonder how sincere she was actually being, instead of making me think she was truly sincer, but than because of this particular element of this story, it would give me reason to doubt any political candidate that had not mentioned this kind of thing at other times... I notice in reading the story that it was sponsered by the Sojourners/Call to Renewal evangelical organization. I wish this made me think she was sincere, but politics being what they are in the US today, it makes me wonder if she, and Edwards, and any other politicians that were there saying the same type of thing, and I'd have the same view for most republicans, but since it was sponsered by the Sojourners/Call to Renewal evangelical organization, it makes me wonder a bit if it was said to make the message fit that audience

Public demonstrations of faith are not necessarily good things, as Jesus took issue with the religious/political leaders of his day for looking the part on the outside but were corrupt on the inside. Some are sincere, but when politicians are forced to meet our particular religious criteria then politics takes precedence over faith. This is why you may not have heard more open statements from politicians - they can still hold sincere beliefs even if they don't let us in on them.

Is Hillary sincere? God only knows, but I would hope those who profess to be fellow believers would show her the same grace and charity for her professed beliefs that they do with other public leaders on their team. To act otherwise is playing political games with religion.

I said it above but it will get lost in the shuffle. Hillary is a career politician who will say anything to appease the electorate. If the wind was blowing from the West but the electorate wanted an Easterly flow, she would appease them by telling them the wind is Easterly and if not, it will be so.

She would live with anyone if it led to the continuation of her career with the presidency as the goal.

So God revealed to you what's in her heart as it applies to this story? Since you're on equal footing ability-wise with the creator, did he give you any inside information on Bush, Giuliani, Romney, or Gingrich, or is revelation restricted to Democrats? I haven't read all your comments so am trying to determine your level of objectivity. As for saying anything to get elected...is Hillary suddenly alone in this regard - did politics in America change this morning and no one sent the memo telling the rest of us?

Sorry for the sarcasm, it isn't meant to be harsh, just meant to separate statements of opinion from statements of fact and to re-state that God alone knows people's true motives. I realize you were merely stating opinions.

Anyone can make the cup look good on the outside, even your favorite political actors. You have no idea what's on the inside.

There's probably a lot of things you're not aware of, does that mean those things never happened? It's ok to not like someone's views or political positions but you don't need to stretch so far to question another person's faith when you have no real idea. That's being petty.

Faith and a democrat, now thats funny. The only faith she had was the faith that her husband wouldn't get caught. Its their dirty little secret, he can fool around and she can fool around, just dont let the public find out. Hillary has kept her sexuality hidden pretty good. But lately her gay side is showing. But, just infront of the left wing nuts. To anyone else she got "FAITH"..ha.....nice try Hill.

Evolution is the core concept in biology, tying together findings from all biological disciplines into a coherent picture of the history of life on earth. The study of evolution is thus a broad and deep discipline, encompassing the study of molecules and the origins of life, the causes and consequences of mass extinctions, the structure, function and evolution of genomes and, of course, the evolution of organismal behavior and appearance.

boy are you cynical! if Hillary says she has faith and she worked though what happened between her and her husband, that should be enough. and if you have proof of her "gay thing", then go for it, but there are plenty of "gay rumors" about bush too, and all sorts of stuff that most reputable journalists won't repeat. just cuz the tabloids publish it, it doesn't make it a real story. i read the tabloids about the bush marriage, but i'm not about to go there.

Faith in God, should be as natural as breathing air and drinking water. The shame of this country has become that we have so many people who seem to have no idea of the impact of faith and religion on everything that goes on in our society and in our world. It seems to me that the troubled people are those who say they don't believe in God and try to discourage others from speaking openly about Him. My opinion is that if you've been taught not to publicly talk about God, most likely, you've been taught wrong!

I hope that the Democratic candidates, as well as the Republicans, understand that it is not just a matter of gaining votes, but rather it's a matter of understanding that no nation or individual can govern effectively without God. Agree or disagree, in the case of people in America, God still most often manifests Himself in the person of Jesus Christ!

God bless the candidates, America and the world. We're going to need His love and blessings!

I don't necessarily agree with Hillary on political matters, but it bothers me that people are using this opportunity to attack her spirituality. Only God knows her heart, or anybody's heart for that matter, and I find it particularly offensive that some folks are essentially saying if she is a democrat she must not be a Christian. Like somebody said in a previous post, above, we are not the judge of other peoples' faith. I've been in that position too many times myself ("You must not be a Christian if you're into metal/ if you're pro-choice/ if you drink alcohol...") Anyway I am inclined to think she IS sincere about this, because I can only imagine what it must have been like being married to Bill Clinton and all the scandal they went through being in the public eye, etc., surely anyone would be praying for strength at a time like that.

welcome to the right Ricky, just wish you had become s conservative like the large majority of us are, but if you want to continue your radical rants, ok, continue to be as radical as you've always been here, and call yourself a neocon, you won't fit in with 99% of us conservatives that way either, but at least you'll be at a better starting point to get things right, and btw, did you know HilLary started as a republican, and was even big in the YOUNG Republicans when she first got into politics? So welcome to Hilary's original starting point, at least she had the right idea at one time.

oh, and Ricky, may God bless you in all you do, and watch over you always.
