A New Pro-Life? »

What pleasantly surprised me, though, was how refreshingly different these young activists were from the stereotypes. While they have clearly chosen, for a variety of personal reasons, to make abortion their primary issue, they were hardly card-carrying members of the Religious Right. When I brought up the notion of a "seamless garment of life

A welcome sight! A proper, consistent view of life: all life is sacred from the fetus to the poor around us to those that die in senseless wars. A consistent policy of life will oust that powers that be that have played the Evangelical Conservatives like a cheap violin...finally they are waking up to this NeoCon nightmare of lies and manipulation.

Maybe there is hope. I'm glad to see that some of the "pro-lifers" recognize that nonhuman animals have a right to life in context of us, as moral beings. Either we, as moral beings, have the obligation to cause the least harm to every living thing or we can use our own personal value system.
Morality is not about you, it is about how you affect the "other". Unfortunately, most religions, including secular humanism, have misapplied the concept of morality to be only about the perpetrator of an act rather than the victim. This is why most people talk past one another, because we care about victims differently.

Although I do not condone abortion(4 kids to prove it)I don't think the laws should have say over what other women want to do. Some may be pregnancies of rape or failed contraceptive.
But those women who are not in those groups should not use it as a form of birth control. The problem is finding out who THOSE women are.now those who DO fall into the 2 groups I mentioned COULD just adopt the babies out, but who am I to decide what they do with their bodies. There is risk involved with abortion they should consider.
I am proud, though, to see that there are some ppl with the sense to know that all around the board, the killing of innocents is wrong.
Great post.

While this is true, they're are risks involved in prenancy that are more common.

Why don't you approve of abortion? Is it because you think the thing inside a woman is an innocent human being, and an abortion kills that innocent human.
So let me get this straight. Abortion kills an innocent human being and you think woman should be allowed to kill inoccent human beings?

I am the Great God "Choice".
I celebrate death.
I require human sacrifice. Over 100 an hour. 3000 a day. A million a year. Almost 50 million so far.
In 1940 Germany I was worshiped as "the Final Solution".
In Cambodia I was worshiped in the killing fields.
Lately I have been worshiped in Rwanda, Sudan and Darfur.
I am worshiped in the US by NOW and DNC.
I always use the same MO: recruit some radicals and solicit the halls of governemnt to legalize worshipping me. Then I sit back and revel in the slaughter.
I am the Great God "Choice". Worship me by slaughtering babies.

Governments also invoke the death penalty.
Companies like WalMart make purchases from sweatshops in Guatemala and China because the goods are so inexpensive. Yet, the pro-life polticos receive more in campaign contributions from WalMart than any other large corporation.
Rwanda and Darfur are both horrible holocausts. So is the slaughter of 655,000 civilians in Iraq caused by whose war?
Augusto Pinochet slaughtered thousands for political reasons in Chile through 1992. What did the republicans do about it? Zero.
Before spouting pro-life lines, be sure you have all your ducks in a row.

Here's my stance on abortion, for myself I don't believe in it FOR MYSELF ONLY-means MY decision, so I've never had one.
I know for a fact that planned parenthood provides very valuable education and services, abortion is not their main thing. They should be commended for everything they have done, if planned parenthood was able to do all it wanted, there would be so many more girls/woman that would not have to face the important decisions they have to make when they get pregnant.
I'm pro choice,(not happy at all with late term), but abortion should be last option in my opinion, and still an option tho. I'm very PRO established life! meaning everyone that's already born! People who are so passionate against abortion-well maybe they could devote some of that passion to the countless orphanages, homeless, starving etc...you know! people already here that need help! devote more time to education of birth control.

If everyone is so serious about life they should consider paying the woman a decant salary to carry the baby to term.
The life movement is all about making a stand on something people do not have to get involved in.
They could also consider volunteering at ghettos to help single moms raise their children and provide babysitting services.
I think that would shut them up.

what about personal responsibility?
Social injustice is valid for many things, but I don't think "passion of the moment" is one of them.

I completely agree. There are so many other issues that need addressing when this issue is raised.
Why don't these people spend their time at an orphanage where these unwanted children would end up if carried to term instead of wasting their time yelling and screaming at women in need.
I am always shocked at the responses I get when I ask religious protesters about why they are there. Usually they won't tell me why a particular issue garners such a strong reaction in them. And when they do, they just say that it is that particular sin's turn.
Why can't people worry about their own children and the parenting that they agreed to do, instead of sticking their noses in other women's wombs?

Plus, I have some personal experiences that show people are completely hypocritical on this issue. Sure, they're all anti-aboriton until they or their daughter gets pregnant...then it is off to the abortion clinic they go.
So like so many issues, especially these neocon wedge issues, it is really all about making yourself out to be morally superior.
If people really wanted to END abortion, why would they be against sex education and want "abstinance only" education? That is bound to lead to unwanted pregnancies.
Also, if they are against abortion, why would they support Bush and denigrate Clinton when the numbers of abortions went down under Clinton and up under Bush? Why would they support politicians who prop up dictators whose governments have forced abortions?

Why bring "neocons" into everything. Its not a political issue...eventhough one party tries to make it one.

An interesting article that turned into the typical anti- Christian - Bush bashing posts. So much for tolerance and diversity.
I think the issue is so involved and to look at different sides that believers take is refreshing and provocative.
thanks zorro...although I note you tag it with name calling.

I think Christians hold the record for name-calling.
Sinner, abomination, ni*ger, feminazi, communist, satanist, man bear pig, terrorist, coward, anarchist, retard-
If you go back 6 months on Netscape there are examples of MUCH MUCH more right-wing name calling. More than all the "liberals" put together...
Read some of Ann Coulter's comments if you want some real good hate.

Did any of you catch Scarborough Country on MSNBC on 6/13? The topic was: 'A New Hampshire middle school is under fire after taking students on a field trip to Planned Parenthood'.
The abortionists must really be running scared when they pull crap like that. I resent my tax dollars being used to brainwash my child that killing babies is okay. Isn't that the tactic the Nazi's used? Indoctrinate them while they are very young.
Reply-

foksipayne1 year, 2 months ago
First, that is an ignorant statement. Planned Parenthood is not JUST about abortion. It teaches responsibility in sexual activities as well as provides contraceptive methods.
Second, it's NOT brainwashing. It is giving your child a right to decide if THEY think that abortion is wrong. If they do they can use one of many contraceptive methods to avoid the "need" of abortion.(and I put need, because for emotional/physical health issues some ppl MAY see it as a need)

If children were taught by their parents there wouldn't be a need to teach such a thing in school. It all goes back to taking responsibility for your own life and the life of your children. Why is it necessary for government and their agency to do every thing for people. Don't you have any self pride?

Roe v Wade had nothing to do with a woman's right to choose. It was intended to protect Doctors who performed the abortions. The following is a direct quote from the decision:
"The decision leaves the State free to place increasing restrictions on abortion as the period of pregnancy lengthens, so long as those restrictions are tailored to the recognized state interests. The decision vindicates the right of the physician to administer medical treatment according to his professional judgment up to the points where important [410 U.S. 113, 166] state interests provide compelling justifications for intervention. Up to those points, the abortion decision in all its aspects is inherently, and primarily, a medical decision, and basic responsibility for it must rest with the physician. If an individual practitioner abuses the privilege of exercising proper medical judgment, the usual remedies, judicial and intra-professional, are available."

Abortion and war are the karmic reactions for killing animals. Bhaktivedanta Swami said:
"Don't kill...We don't say, 'Stop eating meat.' You can eat meat, but (not) by killing. Simply wait (until the animal dies of natural causes) and you'll get the carcasses.
"You are killing innocent cows and other animals--nature will take revenge...This is nature's law. 'You have killed. Now you kill yourselves.' You'll kill your own child--abortion...
"Who are these children being killed? They are these meat-eaters. They enjoyed themselves when so many animals were killed and now they're being killed by their own mothers. If you kill the cow, who is your mother, then in some future lifetime your mother will kill you.
"...stop these killing houses. It is very sinful. That is why they have so many wars. Every ten or fifteen years there is a big war--a wholesale slaughterhouse for humankind...by the law of karma, every action has its reaction."

I'm so sick of all of these anti freedom people. Pro lifers are nothing more than fascists that want to take away people's the freedom to choose. Just typical. I don't like it so I want to force everyone else to conform to my narrow minded views. Talk about unamerican and unpatriotic.

I agree with you 100%!!! Pro-lifers do want to take away people's freedom. P-L's want to take away an individual human's right to murder another individual human. Shame on them. Everyone should have the right to do whatever they want reguardless of the effect on others. All laws should be abolished because all laws take away freedom. If we are our own moral authority, then no one else has the right to tell us what is right and what is wrong, period and exclamation point.!

These two posts are perfect examples of how entrenched people are in their beliefs on this issue. No one is ever going to change anyone's mind on this, be it through name calling, intimidation or legislation, so why bother?
However, there is some common ground here. I think both sides agree that we'd all like to see fewer abortions. If certain anti-abortion folks would realize that taking away birth control and preaching abstinence probably increases the number of abortions performed, we'd certainly be on the right track.

Typical. Beat the abortion is murder drum. A zygote, embryo, blastocyst, fetus, etc. are not human beings, so therefore it is not murder. But it's typical that you try and distort the facts to fit whatever you believe. The constitution is explicit in it's wording stating that congress shall make no law concerning what a person may or may not put in their body or what they can or cannot do to their body. It's reprehensible that you people think that you can legislate your morality for everyone. If you don't like abortion Move to Iran. All you fundies would be perfect there, because obviously all you want it a religious state here.
