Now if we could only shed some of the other fundamentalisms of the Puritans - like killing off natives who refuse to convert.

Roger Williams was expelled from the Massachusetts Bay colony and went south to found the state of RI.The state was founded on complete religious freedom and was the last of the colonies to endorse the constitution, demanding that a seperation of church and state be included in the Bill of Rights.Banning Christmas and burning witches is exactly the reason for not allowing religion to make laws that affect all.

You keep saying separation but the word was establishment. Courts only recently made it into a separation. Until then everyone understood what establishment meant. No designated Church of America.

One of the banks in my town holds a wassail open house every year. But it's not at all like the description above. Banks, you know. Very sane (& stodgy). :)

It appears the Mass. Bay Colony considered themselves to be an English colony, & were not at all looking to break from the Church of England, but rather to 'purify' it. Not all Puritans wanted to break with England. And not all pilgrims were Puritans. I think there are descendants of the Church of England Puritans who are still angry about losing the Revolution.

        http://www.pilgrimhall.org/PSNoteNewPilgrimPuri...

The Pennsylvania colony (Wm. Penn) was the first secular democracy in the new world. Penn was a Quaker. (And they didn't kill the Indians).

Good article, jordan. I do however disagree with one important statement: "There was nothing revolutionary about the main body of its doctrine. . Its innovating principle was in the idea that the Bible, rather than any established religious hierarchy, was the final authority." This IS a revolutionary idea. It overthrows the political and religious authority of the established church, and though now it is the accepted idea of Protestants in America, it contradicts Catholic doctrine.

Remember, education and Evangelical Christianity (which has its roots in the Puritan movement) do not often go together.

I find it amusing that people like Bill O'Reilly will hammer away at liberals for "attacking" Christmas. He pontificates and bloviates about how Christmas is one of the founding traditions of America. Hmmm, somebody should maybe send this story to Bill.

Bill O'Reilly said 'anybody who doesn't support the campaign against Iraq is a bad american' before the Iraq war began.

If I had said something like that, I'd be too ashamed to say much else.

But apparently some people have no shame, or disposable memories that throw all such bloody gaffes into the recycle bin immediately and spin them away

I think this bit of history shows that even the "purest" of god's children are capable of twisting his word into anything they want to make others conform to their beliefs.

It is now believed that the "witches" of Salem were actually experiencing the effects of ergot poisoning which causes hallucinations.Sick people were killed by christians because they acted differently!

              mntnman444,

              Good post!

It is interesting to see how history gets rewritten, by the party of spin, to demonize others. But, as soon as you point out the realities of history, they will go off on tangents and start spinning a new story.

              Thanks, interesting.

How many Christians actually celebrate the real reason of the season? Many give it lip service. How many actually make the spreading of the good news the main point of Christmas?

I want to be one of them. So to all Merry Christmas. For our Savior is born. Rejoice for the love of God is upon us.

Good will to all man kind.

                And to you, too, cowboygrandpa.

There has been some discussion as to the actual translation of some passages from scripture.

Some insist upon: Peace on Earth, goodwill to men. Which would extend peace to everyone.

Others adhere to: Peace on Earth to men of goodwill. Which may indicate that some deserve peace, others may not have earned it.

In any case, may you all enjoy the best that this season has to offer, whatever your beliefs or persuasion. I prefer to be inclusive with my good wishes for the season, rather than exclusive.

And still others, "Peace to men on whom God's favor rests." Draw your own conclusions. ;) Well. Peace of the Season to all from me, rather my favor rests on you or not!

In actual fact the Puritans were right. The verse "shepherds were abiding with their flocks by night" tells the time of the year. Definitely not December.

Yeah, Christmas is actually a celebration of the sun being born again and returning towards its upperward journey through the sky. But, meanwhile. In Boston Christmas was banned. Some things never change.

No, solstice celebrations are. Christmas is the celebration of Christ's birth, on a day He most likely was not born.

2000 years later. He is still celebrated. Alleluia!

That in and of itself should be proof enough that He is the Son of God-- through all of the unwise selfish rulers that tried to discredit Him and remove Him from society.

He is still here. They are long gone and forgotten.

                            Repent!

The point here is that there is no such thing as the "war on christmas",it was fabricated by a windbag hateful person...and when there was,it was radical christians who conducted it through law,not athiests or "liberals".
