The story itself needs no comment, it's horrible that they let this guy go and it's terrible what he did. Anyone with a heart can see and understand that.

This means that when there is a contradiction the later spoken verse replaces the earlier one. A significant portion of the Quran is abrogated. The early Meccan peaceful verses are abrogated by the later Medina war like verses. What a religion. It changed as it went and they document that.
