Why The Gods Are Not Winning »
Posted By Neophile 4 months ago in NewsDisbelief now rivals the great faiths in numbers and influence. Never before has religion faced such enormous levels of disbelief, or faced a hazard as powerful as that posed by modernity. The religious industry simply lacks a reliable stratagem for defeating disbelief in the 21st century.

Disbelief in record numbers? I suppose this is so considering our planets population is the greatest it has ever been as far as we know. But, hey, God destroyed a whole lot of people with a great flood, according to the Bible and other religious writings. Only 8 people survived.

Many Christians DO feel they need to convert the non-believers--that ONLY through Christ can a soul avoid the express elevator to hell.
I get a Watchtower Pusher at my doorstep every three or four weeks. I'm thank them and tell them I'm secure in my philosophy. My son mentioned there were people handing out Bibles on the grounds of his middle school. Parker had no idea who they were but told me he'd call my cell if they showed up again. I get upset as well over the efforts by some sects to dilute science instruction in public schools with such nonsense as 'teaching the controversy' about evolution or including 'Intelligent Design'.
I've been told to my face that I can't be a really good person if I didn't accept Jesus, and that's just downright RUDE.
I know the vast majority of religious folk are not like this and it is unfortunate that the most rabid and shrill become the poster children for the mainstream.

You're absolutely right. There are rude, obnoxious people that you will meet in life and they will be religious, non-religious, atheist, polytheist, et cetera. Sorry.

Personally I believe in Jesus but I also dislike the preachers' tone. They talk like as if they are kings or dictators. They always give me a feel that they are actually telling the people, "Just believe me and stop asking questions."
On the evolution/design problem, I think it should be taught in schools and ask the students to think. At least that can help them with logical thinking ,right?

Because it's been over 2,000 years since He was here. Because "plastic" has blinded our eyes. I've lost my faith several times, don't think I didn't have my low moments. I've hated God for my problems. I've asked "WHY GOD?" and thought He never answered. But looking back, it was I myself who refused to open my eyes, my ears, my eyes and my spirit to His calling.

So, God is a "he", and a Jewish man, and you worship a half jew/half god and jewish mythology. Do you also accept the depiction of the jewish demigod as looking like a Irish rock star, and if so, what was that anglo doing in the middle east 2,000 years ago. Also, explain why the jesus story is EXACTLY the same as the Roman Emperor Agustus, including virgin birth, son of god, ect..., also the same as many Egyptian Pharohs and Greek demigods. Same exact story.
Perhaps, you are flip flopping bewteen believing in a steaming cauldren of liquid crap, and occasionally getting a whiff of the fresh air of free thought, uncontanimated by superstition.
There is no evidence for any of the thousands of gods humans (men ususally) have created over the hundreds of thousands of years humans have existed on this 9 billion year old planet. No evidence for any of the thousands of aferlives men have created.

God isn't a 'he,' even in the Hebrew Bible. But you wouldn't know that because you don't know much of anything. Nor was Christ half Jew/half God. Mythology? Perhaps, perhaps not. Demigod? Not in terms of theology.
Sure there's a lot of parallels between ANE texts, Agustus and Christ. There are a lot of parallels between the history of Rome and the current government of the US, but that doesn't make the US a myth.
There's plenty of 'evidence' for those that believe. Just because it's not your kind of evidence doesn't mean it's lacking. Did quarks exist 300 years ago? Or did they not exist because the evidence couldn't be measured? I think they existed, but I bet you'd have been hard pressed to prove their existence.

According to Bible prophecy, there is supposed to be a great falling away before the world ends. Maybe scientists will find missing links between bats and shrews, pteranodons and lizards, Venus Fly Traps and regular plants, and, seeing simple molecules coming together to form complex DNA to form cells in away that won't look miraculous at all. Where it will all look so simple, boring, and SO easy to explain, people will leave churches in droves.

Indeed! I find it all so very fascinating!
I mean, take a look at the octopus starting at about 1:20:

The most boring answer I can possibly think of is, "God did it."
